Easy & Fun Last-Minute Decorating for Christmas

Still decorating.

Yesterday when I posted a quick project with leftover christmas balls, I promised to show this ridiculously quick and easy decoration that was in the background. Made them in about 30 minutes.

What you need:  a couple of old thrifted frames from your pile 'o frames, your trusty dusty staple gun, some fabric that makes your heart sing, a printer and some kind of super easy photo software, buttons, and some blue tack (which is actually white, in this case).

I had this sample of IKEA fabric laying around for about a year now...thought I was going to use it for our oversized ottoman we are making...but it was too bold for that space. Then I thought it might go for a valance curtain on a window. Nope. Not that either. But I LOVE accents of black and white, so out it came to find its place as the backdrop of these simple holiday decorations.

What's next? Staple. You can cut the material to 'about' the size, and just staple it to the back of the frame. Pull and stretch as you do.

This was the first round that went up last minute (literally) before this year's annual ornament exchange  with girlfriends - handmade of course. I used one of the free sage green backgrounds that I know and trust from Aimee at Sprik Space. "Very Merry". That's my message this year.

They looked a bit lonely on that wall behind our table. Of course, with bits and parts of the house still not remodeled, the final look doesn't come together quite yet. You can see in the pic below what's done and what's still in progress.

Now, I liked the pale sage green, but it wasn't making me look twice. So I changed to a muted red background, like you saw in the photo of my last-minute chandelier holiday dress yesterday.

You can also see that my hubby put up a couple of IKEA picture rails for me (so that time isn't included in the 30 minutes it took me to do these quick frames). Next grab some buttons and blue tack. I originally pulled out some colored wire from my craft stash, but it didn't find a home here.

No, I didn't even bother to glue the buttons because I'll just take them apart and use them somewhere else another time. This isn't a permanent installment, so the solutions don't need to be permanent.

I grabbed the last of my extra christmas balls - the ones that were too heavy to put on the chandelier dress - and gave them a home on the picture ledge beside the frames.

A couple of times passing by made me realize I wasn't digging the muted red either. So one last trip to the computer scored me this fun turquoise blue printout. I simply chose a solid colored background in Photoshop, and found 2 different fonts that I liked for the 'very' and 'merry'. They are held to the material background with...you guessed it...blue tack. And on went the buttons with blue tack. Easy, quick, and no mess.

I put my vintage bottles with the 1-minute DIY poinsettias on the table. But they looked a bit lonely.

So I grabbed a bit of greenery from the bottom of our christmas tree and now they sit nice and nestled on the table. They might even get the surprise of some simple white flowers to hold.

When I pull back to get a photo of the entire area, it isn't quite the 'complete' picture that I want because of the things that still need remodeled or renovated. But, it's an improvement over what I started with and gives me a nice surprise punch of color for the holiday.

I've got one more DIY decoration that I'm determined to get up before Christmas day - so perhaps I'll have one more of these last-minute decoration posts. And because we don't really have to take down the Christmas tree until 20 days after Christmas in Sweden (a tradition called julgransplundring where friends and family dance and sing around the tree before taking it down), I'll have plenty of time to enjoy my last-minute holiday decorations. I'm not sure how many Swedes still adhere to that old tradition...but you can be sure we'll be holding out the full 20 days at my house this year.

Until next time...
Mike

Message in a Repurposed Bottle

What a super cute and simple repurposed decor idea from Cheryl at Nefotlak (try to say that 3 times fast!). It's a modern-day version of 'message in a bottle'.

Cheryl shares the fonts she used and shows lots of pretty eye candy for this super simple but sweet project with repurposed jars, so make sure to hop over to her place and have a look. You'll be so happy when you see her adorable room decorations - it's one of those sites you stumble on and have to stay a while to enjoy the happiness.

I need some empty jars. Spaghetti sauce for dinner tonight?

Until next time...

DIY Black Lace Candles

Camilla at Family Chic says her DIY black lace candles are the perfect touch for Halloween. But I could certainly see these fitting in many homes year 'round. Or what about an evening wedding...that would be divine!

My suggestion? Dig in your existing stash to find something to re-use, or visit your local thrift store. I'm sure you'll find both lace and votives!

Until next time...

Light Up The Smile - DIY Chandelier

It may not light up your room, but it will certainly light up the smile on your little princess! This chandelier is made entirely from easy-to-find recycled items.

What you need:  1 paper towel roll, 2 cereal boxes, 1 lg plastic soda bottle, black paint, and some paperclips.

You'll find a detailed tutorial over at Jellyfish Jelly. She even gives an easier version for smaller hands to make their own. I tell you what...I actually had to do a double-take to see that the crystals were from the plastic soda bottle. What a great DIY party decoration idea. Or in the corner of your little princess's  bedroom. Would you put it anywhere else in your house?

Until next time...
Mike

Semi-Extreme Home (Uh, Office) Makeover - Part II

Time for another episode of the Semi-Extreme Home (Uh, Office) Makeover.

So, while I'm waiting for inspiration to come down and strike me over the head - giving me just the right idea for a window treatment - I finally brought out the message board that I made over 4 years ago (not kidding) alongside my mom who was over here for a vacay visit. And although I was absolutely in love with this message board and she turned out exactly how I wanted, she never found a wall to call home - but survived being moved around umpteen times from storage space to storage space.

Well, now she has a home and is ready to strut her stuff.

Just like the legendary Coco Chanel, she has a lot of skeletons in her closet. For instance, just take one look at her backside and you'll see she's not as fancy as she appears. In fact, she's made from a piece cardboard, batting, some scrap muslin material, and packing tape. However, and just like the original Coco, her accessories are impeccable with vintage ribbon (actually from Paris) and mismatched black vintage buttons.

How to? Lay the batting over the cardboard, then wrap the muslin around, and glue on the backside. Use the packing tape to hold it in place while the glue dries, and then decide to leave the tape on there forever and ever. Lay the ribbon in place - criss crossing each other to form the harlequin pattern - and glue around on the backside. Again...tape to hold while drying. Find a large, thick needle that will go through the cardboard and thread on your buttons at the connecting points of the ribbon. Use a thick thread or even embroidery threads and tie on the backside.

How did we hang her? By placing the screws discretely behind the ribbons near each of the four corners. So it looks like she is magically hanging without hardware.

Voila! She's gorgeous, and has found herself a home in the (hopefully) soon to be revealed office remodel.

I can't wait to expand her line of accessories. Right now they include my inspiration for the office, Elianne from Carambatack Design in Norway, and photos of my babes as babies. Elianne will be framed, but until that time she complements Coco.

Now if I could only talk Diane from In My Own Style to come for a window treatment consultation! Well, here's to dreaming.

Until next time...
Mike

Semi-Extreme Home (Uh, Office) Makeover - Part I

Well. It's happened. We have officially switched gears from our unfinished bedroom remodel to an office space remodel.

Is it just us? Or does this happen to you, too? You get to a stopping point on one remodel project - and that is just enough to take the steam out of you. Then you get excited about starting something else? My hope is that one day it will all come full circle, and we come back 'round to finish those projects that we put on hold.

Having said that, I am happily sitting in my freshly painted bright office - feeling much more inspired than in the cluttered cave I had to work with before. We are a few days away from being done (which could mean about 3 months according to our remodel patterns), but meanwhile I have a quick and easy upcycle project to share, and a peek at another in progress - both adding to the office decor but practical at the same time.

While I was watching paint dry - no joke - I had a look at our plain white metal file cabinet in the middle of the room and thought, "I can do better than that." So, off I went to my beautifully organized craft storage room junk collection closet and pulled out some wallpaper samples that I like to collect for when that 'perfect project' inspiration hits. This may not be that, but it is a project where I can use those papers for the greater good.

I like to take a few wallpaper samples each time I visit my local home builder's store. I've got a nice little collection now. There are multiple papers inside each of those rolls.

And the winners are...

After a quick cleaning of the lower part of the cabinet with a Mr. Clean magic eraser (which of course I have to bring back with me each time I visit the U.S. since we don't have them here in Sweden yet), I cut the wallpaper to the size of the cabinet drawer fronts. Then it was time to arrange the papers by using tape and switching them around until I was happy. Next came a kitchen sponge to smear on some good ol' fashioned glue (like Elmer's), straight onto the cabinet.

Up went the wallpaper piece, and out came an exacto knife to slice off those extra bits hanging over the edges.

Ta-dah! Here she is - all dressed up and nowhere to go. But she does has a fresh new space to stand in.

Here's a look at the before.

And after.

It was a super simple upcycle project - and with freebie wallpaper samples that I keep around, it didn't cost me a penny! Just an hour of time.

Stick around for Part II of the Semi-Extreme Home Office Makeover.

Until next time...
Mike

Semi-Extreme Home (Uh, Bedroom) Makeover - DIY - Part II

Did you catch the first episode of our Semi-Extreme Home Bedroom Makeover? It ended in a not-quite-right moment. Ugh! Don't you hate spending time on a project and your heart doesn't flutter when you stand back to admire your genius self? Well, my best advice is to sit with it for a couple of weeks a while, and then CHANGE IT so your heart flies!

Down comes the floating wall hanging and out comes a super long strip of black velvet (ahhh, velvet) picked up from the scrap bin at the fabric store. I vow there will be
no sewing this time! I did bring out my handy-dandy European flip measuring stick (hmmm...I might have to post about some of my favorite tools sometime soon) to make sure that the width of my (now) two strips of fabric were the same after I folded under the edges, and that they were placed the same width from the opposite outer edges of the wall hanging. I pulled them tight, stapled them over the edges, and for some unknown reason actually trimmed the backside - even though it would be sight-unseen when hung on the wall again. That's the wierd thing. For every corner I cut in DIY projects, for no good reason other than lack of patience, I have a polar side that must have things neat and tidy in the end.

Now we are getting somewhere! Ah, my beloved black and white (ok, beige, but close enough)! Now my heart starts to flitter. Now I can see her coming into her own.

I have been so inspired by the use of vintage and costume brooches lately (click on inspiration here and here) that I've subconsciously started a little collection. And while I'm waiting to collect enough to actually do something with, I'm thinking to myself, "Why not use them to embellish a project in the meanwhile?"

Out they come, perfectly suited on their black velvet background. My husband asked, "Where are the pins on my side?" Well...that brooch DIY project may have just shown itself. We'll just have to wait and see!

Until next time...

Recycled-Repurposed Rotary Telephones

I have a HUGE appreciation for creative genius! Just look at these sheep created from old rotary telephones. LOVE them!

See more photos at What the Cool

And there is always at least one black sheep in the family!

See more photos at What the Cool

Yes, the bodies are the telephone cords. Remember those long cords? We had a 10ft cord at our house...which I think was stretched to about 20ft after 3 teenage girls used it.

Side note:  My son recently found an old unused rotary dial telephone at his grandparent's house and brought it home. I literally laughed out loud when I had to show him how to dial on it!

Until next time...

How to Sew a Summer Dress and Save the World (DIY)

I've started a series called 'How to (insert project here)...and Save the World'. When I post or feature projects that are upcycled/repurposed in nature, they will proudly carry this title so you quickly know that there are good things ahead - not only for you but for our planet! Check out the previous posts:

How to make a wall garden and save the world
How to use wooden pallets and save the world

This post highlights a project I tackled on Mother's Day...and I had the most enjoyable day! You see, I have convinced myself that I cannot sew. Turns out...I CAN sew...just not very well. But my daughter doesn't seem to mind - and for that I'll be forever grateful!

Beware...if you CAN sew REALLY well, what you are about to see may be disturbing. So I ask for your forgiveness in advance.

If you can't sew, like me, I hope you will be inspired enough by this to give it (or something else) a try!

Well, there were several mistakes along the way...but I am thrilled with my 'not quite perfect but perfect for me!' summer dress for my little chica.

Until next time...
Michael
